About the Laurel Crown Tradition

Corona d'Alloro

The laurel crown, "corona di alloro," has been a symbol of achievement since ancient Rome! The crown was worn by emperors, poets, and scholars as a mark of greatness, victory, and intellect. In Italy, as a statement of cultural continuity, the laurel crown became a symbol of academic completion.

When a student graduates or defends their thesis, they wear a fresh laurel crown during the celebration. These can be worn with just leaves or berries, or elaborately decorated with flowers and a ribbon of their choice. The ribbon color is often chosen to match the graduate’s attire, favorite color, or the corresponding major color (for example, burgundy is often used for communications, white for humanities, and blue for business).

Another common tradition is for the laurel crown to be placed upon the graduate’s head by a close friend or family member, as a symbol of community and acknowledgement to the people who helped the graduate along their journey.

Natura e Amore is happy to be able to honor Roman heritage while extending the tradition to both Italian and international students.
